Getting an Intern for the Summer? Read this First!

Are you thinking about hiring an intern?

Couple of things to consider:

  • Hiring an intern doesn’t mean they will be free. Many colleges now require that interns be paid something. A stipend, a weekly or monthly fee or they be able to use the experience as a college credit.
  • Using the experience as a college credit means you have to be in order and have it organized an laid out what the intern will learn, do each day, and how this will benefit them in college.
  • Also, colleges look down on you if your job description is more about your business needing help then how you will help the student.

Colleges are not concerned about your biz ( I’ve seen many business turned down for this reason). Having an intern is great help- I’ve had a few. But I learned quickly that I had to be very organized, have set tasks for them and begin work at 9 am, and give A LOT of direction. Basically, Make it a win/win for them and make sure they are learning something everyday.

I wanted to break this down for you because a lot of people mention getting interns but they are not ready or not organized enough yet to bring a young mind into their business. Consider these things FIRST before heading up to career services department of your local college, so they trust you with their students from day one.
