How to Build a Website that Converts with Natalie McGuire

If only there was a button every business owner had on their keyboard that read “Create Profitable Website Now.” And when this magical button was pressed, a perfect specimen of website would manifest and thousands upon thousands of dollars would come bursting out of their hard drive.

Brings a tear to my eye just thinking about it…

Of course, in this world, kale would taste like cake, it would always be 72-degrees outside, and we’d all get ponies on our tenth birthdays, but I digress…

Hey. We’re all entrepreneurs and small business owners here. You know that your business doesn’t exist without customers, and we all need websites that will promote our products and services for us. Our websites should function like the best, most enthusiastic employee that works for us 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, never gets sick, never takes a vacation, and brings home the bacon. Or the Benjamins. But hopefully both.

 

Unfortunately, during this quest to get a website up, oftentimes we start to focus on the wrong things. We get caught up in details like, what colors the website should have, where a sidebar should be or what special WordPress plugin we want to use, and pretty soon, all you have is a pretty picture for a website. (Or a pretty big mess.) Without a sense of direction, without a strategy, oftentimes you’re also left without customers.

Ugh…

We certainly don’t do this on purpose. When we think “website design” we think aesthetics. After all design is pretty! Design is colors! Design is fonts! Design is fun! We all have eyes, so therefore, we’re all qualified to weigh in on what this thing should look like!

But, here’s the thing: Website design is SO much more than just a pretty picture. (Although it is a perk!) In order to get those customers, your website should communicate your business’ personality and core messaging to your dream customer so they immediately understand who you are, what you do, and why they need you, all in one easy-to-understand-yet-visually-appealing package. 

When a customer lands on your website and feels like they already know you without talking to you, when they feel like you understand them immediately, when your copy writing clearly explains the benefits of working with you, you become an obvious choice over your competitors. In fact, it blows your competition out of the water.

What makes a design beautiful and memorable is the thought-process and strategy behind it, not empty aesthetics of trendy fonts or the latest “in” colors. From copy writing to photography to the structure and layout of your website, all these pieces work together, tell your unique story and establish your value, convincing your customer to buy from you again and again. Which I think we can all agree is the icing on your kale cake.
