Marketing 101 Class Aug 20th
I lost money I didn’t have creating marketing plans that didn’t work.
I was moving really fast in the wrong places and not being authentic with my message.
I couldn’t do video because I hated my Louisiana twang. I couldn’t take new photos because I hadn’t lost that last 15 pounds.
All the while, I’m missing out on potential clients, not getting engagement on social media, no one signing up to my email list and drip drop of coaching clients-with a consistency I couldn’t depend on.
Then, I decided to dig deep and use some of that marketing knowledge that I had. In addition, I started to read every single marketing book I could get my hands on.
The result…. I created a social media campaign that got me to the White House. I got myself on the marketing team of an international presidential campaign for 3 months, created a national conference for a fortune 100 company, and I pulled a 6-figure contract to teach banker marketing and business development in another country.

All from leveraging those same tools that we typically ignore.

6 ways to market your book

Your book is not just a book. Your book is an integral part of your business. It needs to be looked at like it’s own major project and

Writing the book is not the hard part. Yes, you’ve heard me right. I’ve preached this over and over because I think it’s one of the biggest myths of becoming an author. It’s super important of course. The book must get done. It must be edited and laid out professionally. THEN, you must follow it up with a multi-channel and multi-platform marketing plan. Meaning-Facebook or Instagram is not a plan. Those 2 social media platforms are KILLER and should definitely52Questions Instagram Screenshot be added to the plan-but they are not the plan.

 

There is a certain element of creativity needed when marketing your book. When I created the plan for #52Questions Journal, I looked through so many colors, events, fashion magazines, travel books etc. just to get ideas and the theme of the entire project was VERY apparent. I bought a specific font that I used throughout, I had a 3 color scheme, and a dedicated 6 week push followed by another 8 week phase out that I discuss { here }

    • Consider your audience. This is with EVERYTHING in your marketing plan. If it’s just about busyness… this messes everyone up. They think since they are active-going to a lot of events and collecting business cards-that business should be popping. But, I want you to think about actual business, your reader, your audience-where are they? Where are they online and live? What organizations are they a part of, what conferences are they attending, what industry journals are they reading, what blogs do they visit daily, what social media platforms get their attention, and what types of marketing engages them the most? Build your marketing plan around your reader and their preferences. This will help you to reach them and keep your busyness full of business.

 

  • Add your book cover and link to all of your business email signatures. You can use a software like WiseStamp to create a signature with a picture, your website and your social media platforms. So, every email you send out is like a marketing message for you and yet another chance for you to get your book in front of potential readers. I used this software to create a pretty book signature in my email for the first 6 months of marketing #52Questions Journal.
  • Create a pre-launch marketing campaign to get everyone ready.
    • This is a ninja move with pluses and minuses. Sometimes-people want to pop out of the gate with a book from nowhere and if you have an audience like Beyonce, this could work. All jokes aside, if you Goal Setting Course Screenshotsimply have an engaged audience, this could still work. I didn’t announce either of my books and both of them have sold quite well. But there are some major pluses to letting your audience know that a book is coming.
    • Letting your audience know in advance and getting their feedback along the way, can make them feel like they are apart of the process AND make them feel more engaged with your book project.
  • Teach from your book. When I launched the Master Strategy Planner, I created a 3 part webinar series with lessons directly from the book. This gave the reader an in depth view of how they should use their planners to take action in their businesses. I also taught an online class before the planner came out ( pre-marketing without mentioning that I had a book coming ) then followed the initial launch with the 3 part post-launch webinar series that was invite-only to book buyers.
  • Twitter is your friend. I point out this social media platform because a lot of authors ignore it. I have watched @Luvvie successfully market, re-tweet and sell her book. I used Instagram to heavily market and re-post the Master Strategy Planner, and for the #52Questions Journal, I created its own Instagram. But I’d definitely suggest creating a super ambitious Twitter campaign for your book. Tweets move quickly-so in your initial book marketing push-tweeting multiple times a day is not uncommon or odd. Because of this rapid movement on Twitter, I’d suggest that you create a series of tweets that you schedule to go out each day. I’d tweet a MINIMUM of 4 times a day on the timezone of your readers. There are multiple platforms that allow you to schedule your tweets including, Tweetdeck, Hootsuite and Buffer.
  • Speaking. This one of the TOP ways that I suggest you market and sell your book. Once you step down from the stage-you are a bonafide expert and if you have a table in the back with books (with a solid conference marketing plan AND a volunteer to help you ) then your books are as good as sold. Books have the ability to enhance your speaking career or to launch your speaking career in addition to giving you a strong product to sell once you leave the stage. After speaking, the audience typically wants to know more about you ( depending on how well you spoke ) and this marketing channel and get the STRONGEST one to sell your book. I’ve seen authors hit their book sales goal monthly from focusing on their speaking…

 

Pre-Launch Marketing

  • Set up your social media channels and start being active ( consistently ) on the topic that your book is about and that you want to be known for. I’d suggest at least 3-6 months of consistent marketing and building an audience with your social media channels beforehand.
  • Start speaking and creating videos along the same vein… The topic that you want to become known for AND that your book is about.
  • Start giving tips and tools in your specialized area.

Remember these things.

It’s your job to create the momentum around your book.

It is your job to keep up the interest around your book.

It’s your job to be creative and keep your book in front of your ideal reader/client.

This wasn’t always the case.
When I was invited to Google Headquarters in 2013, I met a really successful entrepreneur, who told me 2 key lessons he’d learned:
1. Try to stay in business long enough to learn exactly “how” to do your business successfully.
2. The most successful businesses make money every single day.
I took those lessons to heart, but it still was a while before I knew exactly how to create that reality in Women CEO Project.
So, here’s what I can tell you…. YOU ABSOLUTELY MUST CREATE.
You must create. If you were to go into Target and there were nothing on the shelves, it’d be pretty hard for them to make some sales or to even have a good day.
You, as a business owner, you must create.
Create products. Create services. Create programs. CREATE.
I started creating when I left Google in 2013. I had a few products that I was marketing horribly, but I was slow ( insecure ) with creating.
You want your business alive. You want it to grow. You want to be around long enough to learn how to build systems and what you want those systems to do in your business-and this takes time.
You’ve heard it before. You’ve heard me say it before-you can absolutely package up your knowledge and sell it.
You have MULTIPLE options when deciding what to create for your business and how to deliver this product.
Digital Products
I’m in love with digital products. They were my first creations AND they typically costs less to create. These can be your entry into creation. Some of our digital products are our BEST Sellers and they can be easily consumed by our clients quickly. They also have no location boundaries. So, these digital products are able to reach our clients who don’t reside in the United States and who don’t have easy access to bookstores.
Sitting down to write an ebook, a guide, a checklist- it can be done tonight and start to add to your bottom line within this week.
Here are some very important creation questions to ask yourself:
What subject matter do you want to be known for teaching?
What lessons do you want to make sure that you audience understands?
Do you need to do more research on these lessons to develop your content?
What do you want you audience to leave you knowing how to do?

What do you want them to do after experiencing your product ( what do you want their next step to be )
Books
We launched our first book December 2015 and the second book in April of 2016. They were 2 of the best ideas of the year and WAY overdue. Writing a book isn’t as hard as you may think-it IS a process that I totally breakdown here. But, it can be done, and it can be a massive add to your business all while bringing in money daily. Courses
When you really have some time and want to get multiples lessons across-consider creating a course. When I am trying to teach something a bit heavier-I’ve put it into a course, and these courses were able to guide my clients through a pace that they were comfortable with. Also, I was able to deliver a lot of info at once without them having to buy more products. Courses can be staples in your business-like our top strategy online course. Then your job just becomes, making sure that you market it ( along with your other products) on a consistent basis.

Just like that, and we are 1 month into 2017. Are your goals and business initiatives on schedule? Most of you started the year with a set of new projects and products that you wanted to create in addition to growing your client base. I wanted to share with you some tried and successful ways that grow Women CEO Project-incrementally, but sometimes substantially.
1. Package up your knowledge. I know you’ve heard this before and you’ve been thinking about creating that ebook, that digital download, that book or course. But have you done it yet? You are more than likely holding back on the project while you wait on it to be perfect or “the right time”. CEOs, now is the right time, and perfection is not needed to teach someone. What is needed, is your knowledge, packaged up in a clear ( plain speak) concise, and helpful way. Make it simple:
  • What 3 major things do you want your client to learn from this product?
  • What do you want your client to do once they finish using/reading your product?
  • What resources can you share with them in addition to your knowledge to enrich this product?
  • What method will you use to deliver this product?
  • What 3 ways/platforms/methods will you use to market this product?
  • What is the deadline to finish and launch this product?
There it is. Done for you. You just need to follow a simple plan and get your knowledge out there. Everyday that you hold back, you keep yourself and your business in the same place in ADDITION to not helping the people that you are supposed to help with your knowledge.
2. Bring the audience to you. If you’re waiting to get called for all of your speaking engagements, to serve on panels, or to meet your ideal client at other’s events…. you’ll be waiting a long time. One of the top speakers in the world who I truly admire, told me that she works/hustles for approximately 70% of the speaking engagements that she gets… that rocked my world. Like really, if she has to hustle like that-even being so known, I surely can’t just wait for my phone to ring. This is precisely why, for the last 14 years, I’ve hosted over 400 events…. Slightly out of shyness ( I know you can’t tell ) and a desire to 1. filter, then 2. bring the crowd to me… I realized that the best way to do just this, was to be in control of my networking and meetings. Let me increase the opportunities for me to speak by creating the event and placing myself as a speaker ( it’s amazing how much I get hired to speak AFTER meeting planners see me speaking). So, the long and short of this method, is to not wait and to take back the control of the type of audience that you want to meet. Why can’t you host your own event, be one of the speakers, AND bring in an audience that fits into your ideal client profile?
3. Know where to spend your time. With the launch of sites like Wix and Squarespace-you can truly create your own website-not within minutes, but within an evening, with wine, and few advils. I can create website… but I’m pretty intermediate at best, it takes me way too many hours, and I usually don’t love to end result.. but I could do it. I’m kind of hard-headed here and will occasionally just try to do things myself, but paying a contractor $100-$200 to create something for me quickly, is worth the money. At this point, I work with A LOT of clients through a monthly rolling calendar and truly am losing money minute by minute if I spend time hanging on the phone, half-azz creating a webpage or having pointless meetings. If you’re unsure on where to spend your time ( it’s in the Master Strategy Planner… ) you need to get really clear on what actually brings money into your business. I ask myself at least monthly, ” Kristi, where pockets in your business make you more profitable? How much time did you spend working and enhancing those pockets this month?”
So ask yourself:
  • What is your most profitable product or activity? If you are not sure, again refer back to the Master Strategy Planner
  • How have you shared or marketed this product in the last month? The last week?
  • What task filled your time when you should have been working on marketing this product?
  • What 2 areas can you pay someone to help you, so that you free up time to work on your profitable product(s)?
4. Leverage technology. No, but for real. I know that everyone is saying this, but this is one of those areas where you really need to pay attention to what is at your fingertips, give yourself some creative space to think about your initiatives and how they technology available can be bent to help you launch these initiatives. For example:
I paid $15 for a contractor ( on Fiverr above ) to research some past conferences in a specific genre, within a 5 year period, then list all of the sponsors.
Then, I had them search on Google/Linkedin and find the specific job title that I needed ( the person who was typically over marketing and saying yay or nay to sponsorships )
He then searched for their email address AND groups that they were in on Linkedin and added this information to a spreadsheet for me.
  • I could then reach out and build a relationship with this contact on Linkedin ( long-term strategy ) so that I can hopefully:
  • understand their marketing needs
  • when their yearly budget goes in ( I need to get them my sponsorship proposal before this time )

So, now that I’ve covered everything Self-Publishing, I wanted to see how your new year was kicking off in addition to giving you some advice so that the end of 2017 can look drastically different from the end of 2016….

 

                                                                                                                                                                                                                Package Up Your Knowledge. A mistake that a lot of people make, especially women, thinking that we MUST be considered an expert before we start packing, benefiting and helping people with our knowledge. I can’t imagine what would happen if we all just shared what we know, what we’ve learned and watch how many lives we’d change. I call it my “recipe” . My recipe like your recipe is unique. Your life experiences coupled along with your knowledge will help someone. You don’t need to be an expert, you don’t need to know it all. You just need to package up your recipe in a way that will help those who don’t have that knowledge. You can do this ALL while you are still learning and perfecting and growing. My coaching is MUCH better in 2017 than it was in 2013 and I expect to offer even more in 2018 than I did this year. Does that mean that I should wait?

 

Focus on Profit-Related Activities. What 3 things make money in your business? List them in order of their weight. Then, after you list them, keep track of how much time you spend on them.

This is a simple fix that I make in some of my client’s businesses immediately. They make the most money when they speak on a stage, but they spend so much of their time making spreadsheets, giving their prices over the phone ( instead of listing them on their website ), having meetings that do not relate to speaking, etc. etc. What you focus on, is what grows-in every area of your life, but being busy in business simply won’t make you successful. You must be busy focusing on, working on, increasing your knowledge on the areas that are most profitable in your business. This is where the bulk of your time should go, while you hire out for the rest.

 

Put yourself in the shoes of your customer. Think about that product, that book, or that course that you finally bought. How long did it take you to buy it? How hard did you vet the coach? Did you watch how long they were consistent? Did read everything that you could about them before you bought? Did you check references, go to their free webinar, download all of their free items on their website first? It’s possible that you did ALL of the above before you bought even an inexpensive product.

 

Now, when it comes to when you are the person who’s selling something, you somehow totally forget that people need and want to vet you too. So, if you don’t have ways for them to get to know you-they won’t buy from you. If you come out the gate with only 1 ways to get to know you and get familiar with your knowledge-they may not have enough information about you to make a decision.

 

Remember, there are SOOOOOOOO many Instagram coaches right now…in EVERY industry. So, if you had yet another coach offer you a product without an entry way ( a book, an ebook, a webinar ) to get to know them, would you buy? Ok, so now, why would someone buy from you? Take some time, develop your offerings and understand the process of your buyers.

 

 

Promote yourself heavy. People can’t buy, like or support what they don’t know about. I know, everyone is scared of people thinking,” Oh, she markets herself so much. She thinks she’s this and that.” CEOs, I get it. Everyone wants to be in business but no one wants to actually look like they are in business. But that’s not how any of this works.

It is your job as a business owner to make your offerings and how you can help your people known.

Does Target, Apple, Walmart have commercials? Do they tell you what’s new at their company? Do they let you know when they are having a sale or special?

I can remember the first time I saw a commercial for the newest Apple phone- I had never bought an Apple product but I was amazed. Apple was doing it’s job. They were letting new people know about their offerings all while reminding those who already were aware of them to check our their new phones.

How to find personal and business clarity one week at a time.

Why is your company, your new website, your new book, what you can help your potential clients with- why are you and sharing that information not worth it? Why go through the trouble of getting a website done, a book published, or creating an event if you’re not going to share it or share it timidly?

Why are you truly timid? What are you scared of? Are all of the things you fear about putting yourself out there bigger than your goal of a successful business?

Promote yourself. Promote your business. Promote your offerings. If someone doesn’t want to hear or know about you, they will leave AND it’s a fantastic chance that they would have never become a client anyway.

 

No team, no problem. I cut a young lady off on Thursday. I was listening, I was letting her tell me her obstacles, but when she fell on excuses, I stopped her. I really wanted to submit a proposal to xxx, but I didn’t have a proposal or know how to make one…. This is where I stopped her. Really? You let not knowing how to create a proposal stand between you and potentially thousands of dollars? That CEOs, is an excuse. We live on them, we let them fill our days and create our current reality.

If type into Google “ How to Create a Proposal” enough information comes up to keep you busy for days- you can pick one template ( for free ) then model yours behind it. OR, you can hire someone on Fiverr for roughy $15 to make one for you. Now proposal is done and you have at least taken a swing at the opportunity.

Having no team, is stressful, but it’s not the reason you should be holding back. There are simply TOOOOOOOO many resources available for us to learn to do something ourselves or to hire ( at a very low cost) someone to help us.

The truth is, it’s better to delegate and to spend your time on tasks that directly make your business money, BUT, most of you reading this email may not be at that level yet. For many of my business years, I wasn’t at that level AND this was before the creation of Fiverr. So, I understand. But for now, not having a team is simply an excuse. You cannot find nor send me a problem, that I cannot find a person to fix. If you think you have an unfixable problem and your entire business is being held up by not having a team, email me your problem here.

 

As you plan your business initiatives for the year, keep these tips in mind AND keep your eyes on this space. Just as we did last year, Women CEO Project will put out a lot of new content and give many opportunities for us to meet on and offline.
