I read an article about Oprah a few years ago on how she had 4 coaches for different areas of her life and that even though SOOOOOO many consultants would offer her their services for FREE, daily, that she instead paid in full for her 4 coaches. 
Why?
Because she said that she wanted to “Own that time”.  
Meaning, she wanted the time that they worked with her to be hers and for their focus to be totally on her needs…….
As I flip through my notes and many of your emails, I get the question of either asking me to work for free ( I get very few of these now) or asking how to get people to stop asking you to work for free. 
Now, hear this, I do think that you need to get some strong client examples, testimonials and work in your portfolio- I DO think you should do that strategically, but this blog post is specifically for AFTER you’ve filled your portfolio with credible and good work. 
If you haven’t gotten any work under your belt yet, that should be your #1 priority.
Before you say that quick yes to working for free, or even get pressured or guilted into doing a free project- I want to help you understand why doing this is HIGHLY detrimental to your business. 
Reasons Working for Free is Killing Your Business
You can’t give the BEST service. We’ve all been in a situation where we absolutely knew we weren’t getting the best from someone else- be it a waiter, our stylist, etc. Then think about- if we’ve asked this person to give us the skills that they have to make a living…..for FREE.
When someone asks you to work for them for free- your mind, heart and your BEST work usually isn’t into to the project because some parts of you is 1. Resentful 2. Busy trying to find other work to make up for the work you are giving away for free. When Oprah said that she ” owns that time” that means that this professional has her appointment as a priority on her calendar, she has prepared for it, and she will deliver her best during their allotted time together.
Putting yourself in a position to not get your value, give you more work of finding a paying client to cover this one, and diluting your services to accommodate the few who aren’t truly ready to work with you ( financially) you do your business the BIGGEST disservice. 
You can’t hire help. At some point in your business, it can’t be just you working. You will hit a wall, you will stop growing and your limitations will be tested. This is usually the time that you need to rely on the skills and the help of someone else’s knowledge, expertise, or sometimes- just someone else’s day to run errands for you, help you clean etc. I see and meet many business owners who could make MASSIVE growth improvements if they could just be working on their business instead of cleaning their house 6 hours a week.
Let’s do the math…You are worth $250 an hour working, or $1000 per speaking engagement, or unlimited $$$ if you had the time to meet with a key check writer for BIGGER biz. But you’re at home cleaning the house- doing a $25 an hour job and losing roughly $225 every hour that you clean….. Let that sit with you. With my condo and now my house- it is an AWFUL use of my time to spend it cleaning, and at the end of the day- I would have a clean house and ZERO dollars….
When you let projects or your time go for free- THIS will be your life. Having to do everything, not being able to pay someone to clean your house, get your groceries, pay your coach or consultant, pay someone to run a few errands for you, or pay a virtual assistant to type up your contracts or presentations while you’re at meetings. CEOs, when you don’t charge- you can’t grow. Because you simply can’t afford to pay the people or create the team to help you grow. 
You can’t expand your business. Some of you are a coaching session, a conference or a business course away from experiencing success. So in addition to hiring help to do home or administrative tasks, you also can’t hire a coach to take your profits higher, or a producer to make your videos POP, or a makeup artists to make you look your best at your next engagement. Basically- you can’t invest to take yourself a step HIGHER.  In the beginning it is acceptable, admirable even to be a scrappy DIYer. Do everything yourself.
Then there’s that wall again. How do you get past it and make yourself stand out? How do you go a step higher? Is this the BEST that you can produce? How much does it cost to do your BEST? Finding out that is usually cost money to step it up- helps you to see now, what that one thing is that has been holding you back. It’s your invoice honey. You haven’t been using it enough 🙂 
You can’t help others. I like to say, that how can I help you if I’m broke? Doesn’t this make sense? If you truly want to help the world, give to organizations or causes you believe in or even to the people you love- YOU need to be ok. Your bills need to be paid. Your staff needs to be paid. Your business needs to be able to keep running.
I’m a SUPER give and I used to give to the point that I didn’t have the money to “re-up” or to keep my business going. Now who does this help? I might be able to help someone one time, but I couldn’t even help them in the future because I gave too much. Here is my rule, be it giving money, free speaking engagements, your time etc.
At the beginning of each year- decide how much you have to give….. Money ( put a dollar amount on it) Speaking ( quantify it- 3 free engagements? 4? ) or Time ( 2 hours a month? A quarter? You decide) Then when that allotment is done…. it’s DONE. And you should feel not one single shred of guilt about it. 
You devalue, disrespect and dilute your power. It happens sometimes by accident. But to purposely put yourself in a weaker position….. why do it? When you devalue or let someone else devalue your services…..they don’t respect it. I mean- they have nothing to lose and the only skin in the game is yours. 
A Little Help:
  • Understand your number #1 goal for pursuing this business.  Understand your financial goal and your milestone goal. Knowing, understanding and keeping these goals in front of you will help you to say a needed  “no” when you are asked to do something that goes again them. 
  • Be VERY clear on what you bring to the table AND be able to articulate it. Yep. It’s your job to tell the world not only what you do, but HOW you can help them. HUGE pitfall…..watching entrepreneurs throw out their shingle then wait for business to come. It simply won’t happen. You MUST learn how to consistently and strategically put yourself out there.   • Understand that you are sitting in a sea of other “professional” folks who do what you say you do. Find 2-3 ways to STANDOUT from your competition and put them in place. A little help–> { watch this webinar here for help }
  • Know that you MUST develop an ABOVE Average knowledge of marketing. Nope, you can’t avoid this area of your business. It is mandatory to understand how to get your message out there, on what platform, how to package it for that platform, how often to market, and how to measure and adjust the results. With ALL of this said, I know that it can take a minute to get on your feet mentally and business wise, before you starting grabbing those clients that you want and you stop getting the urge to do it for free, or before you stop caving in to the ” exposure ” trap in lieu of payment….
I know this is a difficult place to be in and I can help you. I’ve been jotting down the top needs for months now and adding them in my planner. Now, I’ve taken those lessons and created a 2 week mastermind. The goal for me was to get the BIGGEST impact, in a short amount of time, with the MOST profitable results- so that you can get back to work!

I just left London, and many of your know that I did a LiveStream on all things Business Strategy, but what you don’t know, is that I also used that time to have meetings with women business owners, wannabe business owners, and even a few people who feel they have very limited options.

It’s a sad feeling to talk to a couple people, let alone one who doesn’t have the luxury of choice. However, I learned that there is power in not having a choice to quit or not launch, or launch tomorrow, not learn, not hustle, not try one more time.

There is power in knowing that quitting is totally off the table and the only way out –  is to WIN.

I started Women CEO Project August 31, 2010 on a whim, a growing idea of what I wanted and needed and what I felt other women needed to be better business owners. It was exciting, growing and moving very fast, but it was on the side for me.

Then, in 2012, The White House called, brought me to DC and recognized me for my work to help women entrepreneurs…… as I walked away from an overwhelming, all day POW WOW with 39 other folks who were doing GREAT works ALL over the world…..

Sometimes I think Twitter is like the misunderstood child of social media.

Facebook is where your friends and family are.

LinkedIn is where you go for jobs related stuff.

And Pinterest is where you pin your dreams.

But where does Twitter fit in? Especially when we are talking about business, or more specifically, your business.

In this post I want to go over some of the benefits, well-known and otherwise, of Twitter.

Some Say Twitter is Like a Cocktail Party

Unlike other social media platforms, Twitter is very much a cocktail party-like experience.

You can jump in and out of conversations.

Make a comment here and there.

Meet new and interesting people with little or no introduction.

And oftentimes, have a laugh in the process.

Once you come to understand and appreciate the way Twitter works, you will wonder why there aren’t more social media platforms like it.

After all, where else in the world can you…

Connect So Easily with Anyone, Even Influential People

Twitter is one of the easiest places to connect with people on the web.

Although it is not the only major benefit of Twitter, it is something quite unique and powerful that only this platform has.

When you are logged in to Twitter, you have the ability to connect with anyone else on there.

Unlike most other social media platforms, Twitter allows you to follow people, even if you don’t directly connect (ie. they don’t follow you back).

I guess it is a little like stalking, but in a nice way. You can keep up to date with people you respect, without needing them to be aware of you.twitter-unique-small-business

And of course you can easily connect with celebrities too!

Ok, perhaps not actual celebrities. Brad Pitt will probably not respond to your tweet, but influential people in your niche might.

And those are the ones you want to get in touch with. The ones that can amplify your message, your content, your tweets.

This can accelerate your growth like almost nothing else on the web.

I used this idea successfully last year, when I wrote a blog post on Social Media and Blogging Influencers.

Many of them I was already connected with on Twitter. And of course, even more after!

But it does not stop there. You can also

  • connect with like-minded people
  • connect with potential customers
  • connect with plain-old “fun to chat with” people.

Other times, you can just sit and watch.

Because Twitter is also…

Like Watching the 6 o’clock News

As you might know, Twitter invented hashtags – or at least some of their users did.

And we know they are amazing, because TV shows and movies are now using them too.

What bigger endorsement can there be? Well, getting into Wikipedia maybe.

But what does all this mean for you?

Twitter enables you to monitor specific topics and trends. And using hashtags is one of the most powerful ways you can do this.

What this means is that Twitter is a place to keep your finger on the pulse of your niche, by watching the topics that affect you, as they happen.

Be the first to get the breaking news in your area of expertise, and pass that on to your followers.

It will help you become an expert and a respected source of information in your niche.

After all, this is the reason most reporters are on Twitter.

And this is almost impossible to do on any other social media channel.

But you don’t have to do this by hand…

There are Powerful Tools to Help You

Because Twitter is such a massive source of information, there are a lot of tools around to help you leverage this powerful resource.

There are tools for:

  • monitoring information in real time
  • chatting on specific topics
  • finding information and conversations that interest you
  • discovering people that you want or need to connect with
  • automating your tweets at the optimal times
  • and much much more

This means that although Twitter itself may not always be simple to use, there are very specific tools available to help you achieve your goals.

If building your network is your focus on Twitter, then I can point you to a number of tools to achieve that goal. I use them all the time.

It could also be that you are looking to find customers who need your services. They are also on Twitter, tweeting their problems out loud.

And you can find them. With the right tools and know-how.

Monitoring your brand might also be on the agenda, and there are ways to do this too.

Twitter can almost do it all.

Which begs the question…

I have a friend and consulting client. 

Who just quit her job. 

Closed her business. 

Left her dog and family in Houston.

And moved about a gazillion miles away to pursue her passion and a build a totally new business. 

 

Nearing her forties, she took a chance on herself, followed my specific advice, made a major move, got some initial success, got connected with some pretty famous celebrities and brands, had the doors to some prime opportunities opened……

 

Then… she quit. 

 

Four months in. She freaking quit and I couldn’t be more upset if I absolutely tried. 

Not because she wasn’t good. Not because she wasn’t experiencing a level of success. But for another reason. 

Let me tell you why.

 

She made 2 HUMONGOUS mistakes that so many entrepreneurs make.  

  • She felt that the success she was seeing from some pretty established folks in her niche, who had put in 10, 20 and 30 years…. She felt that type of success was owed to her after 4 measly months. 
  • She compared her beginnings to someone else’s established success and became overwhelmed, frustrated and felt hopeless.

 

CEOs, hear me now…

 

You don’t get points for showing up. You gain progress from putting in the work….

  

Don’t to this. It is a setup for failure. It is a prime recipe for unfounded feelings of inadequacies. 

I consulted her to some quick success but her fear, feelings on entitlement, and being overwhelmed made her quit. 

Most of you get frustrated because you’re comparing your first attempt to someone else’s 100th attempt. Your first proposal that didn’t work to someone else’s 25th proposal. 

Your first attempt at business from your comfy apartment with someone who lived in their studio for the first 8 years of building their business. 

Don’t ask me about my over 400th event’s success, ask me about my first event in 2004, that I prepared for, for WEEKS, and that absolutely ZERO people showed up to except my sister… And she had to bribe me with chocolate and a pedicure so I wouldn’t cry. 

 I was full of embarrassment. Full of what I imagined, were failure thoughts and looks from others in my real estate office.  

But then the next week, I was marketing a NEW event, with new ideas and learning new ways to make it a success. It took a while, and I had a winning formula in 2 years, but what if I had quit from the first attempt?

Ask me about my first proposal- that was ugly and on Google docs and so amateur and emailed ahead of my meeting because I was broke and out of ink. Or having to pull in 2 of my neighbors to roll with me to this meeting so that I looked like I had a team- when I had only the awesome meal I promised I’d cook them for the favor. 

My first 5 years in business were rough and I haven’t finished seeing rough times. Every single person who loved me, told me I should quit and move back home. But I couldn’t and thank goodness I didn’t, because successful year 6, year, 7, year, 8 and on were waiting for me. 

I could fill your head and your inbox with plenty of stories, but you must get one thing from this. 

 

It AIN’T Quitting Time. 

 

Failure has not found you. Failure is not your destiny. Failure is not your home- until you give up. 
Don’t get caught up comparing your beginnings to someone who’s been in the game, cutting their teeth, consistently hitting the pavement and paying their dues.

Until you have exhausted every single, solitary, opportunity, angle and option that you have developed for this business… it’s not time to let it go. 

 

Hold on to your intuition, that feeling that you just can’t let it go, that desire to think of something new, to try again. Hold on to your business and the reasons why you started it and imagine yourself feeling like a success, not like a failure. 

 

Just focus on starting, executing, on not letting fear succeed, on tapping into that power that you KNOW you possess. Focus on being the most fearless, courageous, creative, entrepreneurially minded, no matter what person you know…. 

and go after it relentlessly.

As my team launched my new course, ReThink Strategy, I developed this REALLY BIG plan of consulting 3000 businesses in the next calendar year. Will it be tough? Of course. Do I know how I’ll do it? Nope, but will I do it? DEFINITELY! 

 
As Les Brown says, the how is not your business, you just put your dreams and goals out there and go to WORK! 
 
So that’s what I did. My goal for the month of April, was to meet with 50 of you awesome women ceo’s and give you an intro consultation to acclimate you to what consulting can do for your business and show you how much clarity having your own ride or die business consultant can add to your business. 
 
For a few of you, I saw the light come into your eyes in the matter of minutes, and for that, I am truly grateful to have played a part. As I met with many of you this past month, I picked up a couple of themes and some of them bothered me enough for me to want to discuss them with all of you. The common themes I found in doing some uber focused sessions this past month are:
 
  • A resistance to determining a specific niche and a trend toward being more of a generalist as opposed to a specialists
  • Determining what exactly what you want to be known for
  • A need to get approval from someone outside of yourself to move forward on your dreams
  • Not focusing on marketing, only using social media to market yourself, or using your marketing tools inconsistently 
  • Having all of the knowledge needed, but not executing on it
 
I gave MANY different suggestions to these 58 women of the course of the month, but A LOT of the consultation initially focused on me asking them some very directed questions that once answered, provided all of the clarity that you needed. 
 
I want to make the lesson BIGGER. So I’m doing a LIVE Google Hangout on Saturday Morning (May 3rd) at 10am-11am Central TZ, where I will tackle those common themes and obstacles and how to get around them.
